Northern
Grit - the exhibition is a showcase to
celebrate the fusion of photography and creative writing, each art form
complementing the other. Black and white photographs of buildings,
landscapes and still life spanning several
years of Pat's work provided Vane Women with a source of inspiration for
the writing process. Their response is a pleasing range of styles and
interpretation. Northern Grit – the book first published and launched at
Durham Lit Fest, 2002. Poems from the book accompany the
exhibition.
The photographs range from Pat's home fell of
Cockfield in Co. Durham to her memories of Middlesbrough where she was
born. She sees the environment in neglect, her subject matter is treated
not tragically but gently. Finding beauty in machines, derelict
buildings and empty rooms her photography is subtle and unemphatic yet, it
is 'a stunning evocation of the Northern scene, where industrial decay
mingles with wild flowers and lark song.'
In previous photographic exhibitions Pat has used
wet processing techniques. Here, she has favoured working digitally using
the highest quality archival inks and papers to produce results equal to
conventional exhibition quality photographic prints. This work is
generated from scanned film negatives and digital originals. More than a
photographic exhibition, it is a shared experience with a creative artist
who demonstrates an alternative approach with poetic
photography.
The project aims not only to exhibit a display of
photographs but also to offer creative writing workshops for the
community, subject to demand and venue facilities.

A performing/writing collective formed in 1993.
The name taken from the address of Darlington Arts Centre in Vane Terrace
where they first met. Apart from producing their own writing, they promote
creative writing through workshops and perform readings of their work
throughout the northern region.
VANE WOMEN PRESS is the publishing arm of Vane Women and is committed to
promoting the work of women writers of quality in the North. The Press has
published nine individual collections and four anthologies. Northern Grit
is the first anthology to include photographs.
