The
village of Butterknowle lies in the Gaunless Valley on the edge
of the Durham coal fields. Its name derives from a geographical
fault.
Whilst many local buildings are of stone, Butterknowle had a
small brick works. Every brick is recognised by the unique mark
of the
brick maker's thumb print seen here at the upper right hand
side. Whilst the works have long since gone its bricks remain
as a reminder.
This photograph
was originally to be an exhibition entry depicting the letter
'r' formed by the two indentations.
