Butterknowle Brick

The village of Butterknowle lies in the Gaunless Valley on the edge of the Durham coal fields. Its name derives from a geographical fault.

Whilst many local buildings are of stone, Butterknowle had a small brick works. Every brick is recognised by the unique mark of t
he brick maker's thumb print seen here at the upper right hand side. Whilst the works have long since gone its bricks remain as a reminder.

This photograph was originally to be an exhibition entry depicting the letter 'r' formed by the two indentations.
