The Persistence of Memory

Edgar Ralph (1880-1957)

As a young man Edgar was a Bandmaster at Long Moor Camp attaining the rank of Sergeant with the Royal Engineers. He served during the first World War and during his service went to Palestine and Egypt. After leaving the military he spent 53 years with the railway in the great age of steam.

Having lost his wife Florence Rosetta he was left to bring up four small children single handed. I remember him as an accomplished musician playing both the piccolo and the flute.

My paternal 'Grandad' known by my father as 'Pop' lived in Middlesbrough (North East England).
